Matthew Stafford New Deal

Stafford, Lions agree to extension
Matthew Stafford and the Lions agreed to a deal, which is an extension of Stafford's previous deal, paying the Lions quarterback $53 Million through 2017. $43 of that 53 Million is guaranteed money. Stafford is an elite quarterback in the league. He may not be top 10, but he is right on the bubble, if in fact he isn't a top 10 NFL quarterback.

In 2011 Stafford threw for a career high 41 touchdowns, but in 2012 that was cut down to 20. This shouldn't worry Lions fans, because his passing yards were right where they were a season ago. Stafford is a big reason this team can succeed in 2012, and in years to come. He can make all of the throws on the field, including the deep throw, and let's not forget that he has the best receiver since Jerry Rice, in Calvin Johnson.

Many people see Stafford as an over-payed starting quarterback, but to me he has earned his money. He is a very good starter, and without him, the Lions would be in a heap of trouble trying to stay competitive. If you don't take my word on it, check out this video.

You can see Stafford make all of the throws in this video, and I was very impressed with the falling away, off the back foot throw to a receiver that was perfectly placed by the sideline. It shows up around 2:25. Stafford is on his way to being a stud in the NFL. Look for him to be great for years to come.
