2013 NFC East Preview

The NFC East should be very competitive in 2013

The NFC East was home to a surprising 2012 Redskins team, and also a very disappointing Eagles team. Let's start out with how 2012 went:

Washington: 10-6

New York: 9-7

Dallas: 8-8

Philadelphia: 4-12

This division, with the exception of the Eagles, was very competitive in 2012. The Redskins, Giants, and Cowboys were all separated by one game. The division saw great Quarterback play out of RGIII, Eli Manning, and Tony Romo. It also showcased some great running games, powered by Alfred Morris of the Redskins, LeSean McCoy of the Eagles, Ahmad Bradshaw of the Giants, and Demarco Murray of the Cowboys. This year the NFC East will not be a powerhouse, but it may hold two playoff teams this season. I see the Redskins winning a little less than they did last season, and I don't think New York will win more than nine this season. The Cowboys should be the favorite this season, and Philadelphia should at least pick up a few more than four wins in 2013.

New York Giants:
Key Additions: LB Dan Connor, TE Brandon Myers, DT Cullen Jenkins
Key Draft Picks: OL Justin Pugh, DE Damontre Moore, QB Ryan Nassib

The Giants just barely missed playoff berth in 2012, but I see a year of regression for the Giants. New York did manage to re-sign Victor Cruz to a new deal which is a big relief to the New York fan base, and Eli Manning will be great this season as he always is. What concerns me, is the fact that New York has lost their leading rusher in Ahmad Bradshaw, and they lack a strong defense that is capable of getting crucial stops in games. The Giants will not be as successful in 2013, as they were in 2012.

What does 2013 have in store for Dallas?

Dallas Cowboys:
Key Additions: LB Ernie Sims, LB Anthony Spencer
Key Draft Picks: OL Travis Frederick, TE Gavin Escobar, WR Terrance Williams

2013 is looking like a good year for Dallas. Romo threw for 4,900 yards last season, Demarco Murray could rush for 1,000 yards, and Dallas has a strong receiving core with Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. If the Cowboys can play D in the Big D, they should have a very successful year. The Cowboys were a mid-level defense last season, but if they can improve some on the defensive end, they will be in good shape to contend for the NFC East title, if not win it.

Washington Redskins:
Key Additions: CB E.J. Biggers, OT Xavier Nixon, WR Donte Stallworth
Key Draft Picks: CB David Amerson, S Baccari Rambo

The Redskins surprised everyone in 2012, as Robert Griffin III, or RG3, took the league by storm. Griffin accounted for 4,000 total yards, and 27 scores. He was truly a one-man wrecking crew. Griffin is so fun to watch, and updates on him from his reconstructive knee surgery have him looking to play week one against the Eagles.

Alfred Morris also had a very productive year, rushing for 1,613 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Washington Redskins had the top running game in the NFL in 2012, and a strong running game should be expected in Washington during the 2013 season. The Redskins also were a top-five run stopping defense in 2012. This team's success this year will rely on RGIII's health. If he can stay healthy, the Skins may be able to take second in this division and sneak into the playoffs.

I thought it would be a little fun to tease Eagles fans with this old picture
Philadelphia Eagles:
Key Additions: Head coach Chip Kelly, CB Patrick Chung, QB Matt Barkley, LB Connor Barwin
Key Draft Picks: QB Matt Barkley, TE Zach Ertz

The Philadelphia Eagles are all in for change in 2013. Andy Reid is gone, Chip Kelly is in, and with that comes a college fast-paced offense that should include some new plays being brought to the NFL. With Kelly you will see a quick no-huddle offense to quickly tire out a defense. It will all be based on how well the ball moves on the ground, and with this offense, the ground game will be solid. LeSean McCoy could easily be good for 1,500 yards, and with Vick or Foles at quarterback, we could see some option plays. Vick is fast enough to be a big option threat, and Foles ran some option plays in the spread in college at the university of Arizona.

The biggest question mark of the 2013 Eagles, and beyond, is the quarterback battle. I see Vick as a player who played well for awhile, but after last season, he is an Eagles fan's worst nightmare. When good, he can be an electrifying player, when bad he is one of the worst quarterbacks in the league. I don't see any of the three guys as a solid quarterback, but Foles should start in 2013. He can handle this offense better, being a tall, mobile, and accurate quarterback. I am a believer that the Eagles franchise quarterback currently isn't on this roster. Eagles fans can prepare for some more heartbreak. They have talent, but lack some key pieces, so they won't be too good in 2013. The future is bright for Philly.

My predictions for 2013 final standings:

1. Dallas Cowboys
2. Washington Redskins
3. New York Giants
4. Philadelphia Eagles

There aren't many surprises here, but I do see New York and Washington possibly flip-flopping. The second place team here may sneak into the 2013 playoffs, though I feel like one team will be in the playoffs from the NFC East in 2013.
